WHY: Often considered the Pepsi of Japanese whisky to Suntory’s Coke, Nikka is Japan’s second largest whisky producer, known for its rich and layered whiskies of finesse. The Nikka Days Whisky is Nikka's answer to Suntory's Hibiki blend: a subtle blend of grain and malt whiskies, creamy and smooth on the palate with fruity and floral notes.

HOW: Using a combination of single malts from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, as well as grain whisky from the famed Coffey still at Miyagikyo.

WHAT: Nikka was founded in 1940 by Masataka Taketsuru, after having overseen construction of Japan’s first whisky distillery: Yamazaki. Taketsuru was sent to Scotland in 1918 to learn about single malt production, and spent his time interning at the Hazelburn Distillery in Campbeltown. After working a ten year contract with Suntory, he left to build the Yoichi Distillery in 1934. Nikka owns and operates two distilleries: Yoichi Distillery on the island of Hokkaido, and the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai. In addition to single malt production, the Miyagikyo Distillery has a large Coffey column still used to make grain whisky for blending, as well as gin and vodka.

Great Summer Flavor

I'm a huge Nikka fan, and this bottle didn't disappoint. Their ability to blend flavors is on full display here, as the pallet on this bottle is so summery and fruity, that you could be mistaken if you didn't know it was a whisky. This is the perfect summer sipping bottle, and makes for a wonderful old fashioned for a new whisky drinker. If you're a peat fan, stay far away, even though there's a hint in the lingering finish, the apple and fruit notes overpower that. Ultimately sippable, there's still enough complexity to it, that if you're a sweet bourbon fan, this should do you well. I'll definitely be making this a staple in my bar, as an intro to Japanese whiskies for those that say they haven't ventured down the scotch rabbit hole. A very good bottle to have during the summer days.
