This incredibly unique blend is the second of Mars Whisky's Malt Duo releases after their initial collaborative effort with Chichibu in 2021. Tsunuki is in subtropical Kagoshima, the southernmost tip of Kyushu, where the mountains meet the sea and plumes of volcanic ash can be seen above Sakurajima. Akkeshi is located on the eastern coast of Japan's northernmost island Hokkaido, a chilly, remote landscape that is home to expansive wetlands and oyster estuaries. These likeminded distilleries exchanged new make malt whisky between 2018 and 2019 to explore how each location's individual terroir would affect the other's whisky. Over the course of the maturation process, the distillery teams communicated to one and other the progression of their whiskies. After 5 plus years in barrel, these exchanged whiskies were blended with malt from their host distillery and bottled, creating two unique versions of the same concept. This Malt Duo from Tsunuki is a blend of Akkeshi single malt whisky, aged in Kagoshima and blended with Tsunuki's own single malt. The result is a lightly peated dram full of juicy, ripe fruit and rich custard, reflecting the unique elegance in Japan's diverse whisky producing regions.
