During a bottle share party in Napa, I had the pleasure of meeting Josh Phelps. He told me that his grandparents are from Glendale, CA, which is essentially where I grew up and currently manage the wine department. He introduced me to his friends, I introduced him to the wine I brought—which seemed like the only white wine in a sea of red wines that night—and we talked shop and life.
I seldom get to meet the head winemakers, and I get very excited when I do! I meet the mind behind the wine, learn about their choices and styles, which gives me insight into what their wines will be like. I learned that he grew up in wine country, is close with his family, loves his friends, and is very down to earth; "grounded," if you will. His company Grounded Wine CO. was formed with a simple philosophy: to make honest wines to share with friends.
Tasting Notes: a good swirl of red and black fruits that are cherries and plums, fine coffee grounds, dark cocoa powder, and a hint of cedar box with black pepper.
