Few craft whiskey distillers outside of Kentucky have made the splash that Colby and Ashley Frey made when they launched their estate-grown Bourbon to huge fanfare.

Growing 100% of their own grains on site at their 1500 acre farm in Fallon, Nevada, Frey Ranch immediately won Bourbon romanticists over with hands-on attention to detail and a penchant for big, bold, high proof flavors.

Rather than stick to the same script year after year, the Freys shook things up with the recent release of their limited edition Quad Malt Bourbon, utilizing the same four-grain mashbill as the standard Bourbon—corn, winter rye, winter wheat, and barley—just with all four grains being malted on-site as well.

As many whiskey fans know, usually the only malted component of a Bourbon is the small percentage of malted barley that’s generally added as a catalyst for fermentation, not the overall flavor of the whiskey. In the case of the Quad Malt Bourbon, the maltiness of all four grains is a flavor enhancer of the highest order with big, fruity flavors up front that morph into candy corn and malted chocolate.

For diehards of Frey Ranch Bourbon, this whiskey is an absolute must-try collectors edition, previously limited only to the distillery’s tasting room.
