As an ardent American Single Malt enthusiast, I try as many ASMs as I can find. I had hopes for Clermont Steep to be decent given that they put Freddy Noe's signature right on the bottle, but I was dead wrong. Clermont Steep is without a doubt the worst ASM I've ever had. It tastes just as bad as it smells, which is the distinct odor of an old fishing trawler. There is a distinct odor and taste of Japanese nori (seaweed) that has been left out for too long. That flavor comes across as a displeasing sourness, which competes with failed attempts at caramel sweetness. It was especially bad when I first cracked the bottle, but in the interest of fairness for all questionable bottles, I will neck pour it and then let it sit for a couple weeks to let it breathe in hopes of it getting better. Clermont Steep got marginally better, but it wasn't by much. I've had whiskey aficionados taste this stuff and they've all agreed that it's terrible. Save your money and buy something else like Stranahans, Balcones, Del Bac or Brother Justus.
