The prize distillery of the iconic Scottish merchant Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach’s renovation from forgotten Highland jewel to craft distillery over the last two decades has been wonderful to witness. Originally built in 1898, then reopened in 1998 after a 15 year closure (with Prince Charles in attendance, no less), Benromach’s steady rise into one of the most flavorful and expressive Highland single malt whiskies has happened almost entirely under the radar.
Benromach’s 2011 vintage release showcased the distillery’s commitment to high-quality barley and hands-off distillation practices to create a clean and vibrant style of malt whisky. Brimming with sweet barley, tropical flavors like banana, and toasted vanilla notes on the finish, the organic was aged in virgin oak casks so to highlight the flavor of the whisky itself.
