I'd heard people speak about Old Pulteney for quite a while before I bought a bottle at Mission Liquor. For the price I expected a middle of the pack single malt Scotch, but what I got was a surprisingly layered Scotch which opened up as I enjoyed. From the first taste, I noticed vanilla, butterscotch, and something in the date/raisin area. After about 15 min, the oak, citrus and something which I'd say was sea-air entered the game. I'd say give it a whirl if you don't want to enter the $80+ range per bottle.
Old Pulteney reminds me of the old man and the sea. An almost salty sea air can be tasted in every bottle they release, and the 12 year gives an salted almond nose and flavor that is very unique to this expression. For its price, this is a very high quality bottle that's worth exploring. I highly recommend this and their 15 year are high quality bottles, with a medium quality price tag. Would be a fine addition to most collections.
