  • WHY: In 2014, to celebrate its heritage as one of Kentucky's premier Bourbon producers, Brown Forman announced the Old Forester Whiskey Row series featuring a line of expressions that would showcase the evolution of the brand from its origins. The 1897 Bottled in Bond edition references the Bottle in Bond act of 1897 that allowed barrels to be matured in a bonded government warehouse in order to prevent tampering from rectifiers. A whiskey labeled as “bonded” could prove that it had no added sugars or ingredients, as it had been under government protection.
  • HOW: To recreate the style of whiskey made in that era, Old Forester used a mashbill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% barley, leading to heavy notes of caramel, vanilla, and honey with plenty of oak spice on the finish.
  • WHAT: The Old Forester brand dates back to 1870 when the Brown brothers named the label after a local doctor who prescribed the whiskey to his patients. Old Forester was the first Bourbon to be sold only in bottles, rather than barrels, giving customers the confidence that nothing had been added to the whiskey in transit. The 1897 Bottled in Bond edition is bottled at 50% ABV.

Smooth

I watched the documentary Neat: The Story of Bourbon where it told about true bourbon being Bottled in Bond. Forester did not disappoint. It was a smooth, deep and enjoyable when sipped straight and neat.
