If you’re a fan of earthy, funky, and robust wines of age, with all of the musks that make aged old world wine truly fantastic, this is your bottle. Old school wines like this are an acquired taste, so if you’re someone who likes big, sweet, smooth Cabernets, this is NOT your wine. However, if you’re someone who likes old Bordeaux and old Rioja, this wine will absolutely blow your mind. Made from just a SINGLE HECTARE of fruit, this vineyard plot is the highest elevation spot at the Cerbaia estate—a tiny area that faces north with stone soils and galestro clay. It’s aged 48 months after fermentation in large Slavonian oak, and it’s been in the bottle now for over a decade. You get all the power and ripeness of a classic Sangiovese-based Brunello here, but you also get the complexity of flavor that can only be found with aged wines. I’m currently buying 2018 Brunelli to lay down in my cellar, so I am absolutely stoked when I can find something like this with more than a decade of maturity to drink now. If you’re new to wine, Montalcino is a region in Tuscany that makes Sangiovese-based wines, similar to Chianti. Brunello di Montalcino is a distinction for wines from the region that go into oak for longer periods of time and are held back after the vintage. The Riservas (as in the wine listed above) go into oak for a minimum of two years, and are held back for six years after the vintage. If you want to know what the very best can taste like after a decade, this is your chance. - David Driscoll, Mission Sales Manager
