94 POINTS: WINE ENTHUSIAST - Made in slightly higher amounts than many of the producer’s other estate wines, this is an outstanding value for the quality, a wildly delicious expression of the grape, region and vintage that is in cohesive harmony. Savory, rocky and textured, it blends 30% of its grapes from neighboring Hellenthal Vineyard, the combination exploding in red tangy fruit.
92 POINTS: WINE SPECTATOR - Offers mouthfilling acidity, with cedar-infused flavors of raspberry ganache and cherry tart, featuring licorice and floral accents. Forest floor notes show on the finish. Drink now through 2025.
91 POINTS: ROBERT PARKER - The Bohan-Dilon is the only wine in the Hirsch lineup that includes fruit from outside the estate—about 25% of the 2018 The Bohan-Dilon Pinot Noir comes from the Hellenthal vineyard, contiguous to the Hirsch property. It's one of the more beautiful expressions of this cuvée I've tasted in some time. The nose is gorgeous, with pure aromas of crushed red cherries, garrigue, lilac, tea leaves and forest floor with more nuances coming through with time. The palate is light to medium-bodied and incredibly elegant, packed to the gills with flavor but weightless with its lively acidity and very fine graininess, finishing long and nuanced. What an incredible vintage for this cuvée!
- WHY: Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, there is no California pinot noir in the store as good as the 2018 Hirsch Bohan-Dillon. For Burgundy drinkers in search of something approachable now, or for California drinkers who enjoy acidity and brightness in their reds, this wine is electric on the palate; loaded with cranberry, tart cherry, and spice.
HOW: The 2018 vintage uses 70% of Hirsch Vineyard's world-famous Pinot Noir and 30% from Hellenthal Vineyard, the only vineyard that is adjacent to Hirsch.
WHAT: Hirsch is the pioneer winemaker on the Sonoma Coast. Started in 1980 by David Hirsch, the estate vineyard is two miles from the ocean at Ft. Ross (AVA) in Sonoma County. It first became known with the wines of Williams Selyem, Kistler, Littorai, and others who made spectacular expressions from Hirsch's fruit. The on-site winery was started in 2002, and winemaker Anthony Filiberti has joined the team to craft some of the most compelling wines of this ‘grand cru’ quality vineyard. Every effort has been made to integrate the wine making with the farming to produce wines that have site typicity: rich pinot fruit married to a profound acidic complexity finished with deep, evolved natural tannins.
