Once again, we’ve secured a great deal on a consistent 90+ point winner from the Loire Valley: Claude Branger’s Muscadet from the Gras Mouton vineyard in Saint-Fiacre. As Vinous noted almost a decade ago in an early 92 point review, Branger manages “a far-flung wealth of vineyards, including walled-in enclaves of which several are subjected to dedicated bottlings, most notably those from the Gras Mouton.”

From 2012 to 2015, Vinous scored the wine 92 points. From 2018 to 2021, Wine Enthusiast rated the wine between 90 and 93 points. At this point, there’s going to be a 90+ score from one of the major critics for the fantastic 2022 that was just released, showcasing what the Enthusiast noted as “yellow fruit and kiwi flavors shot through with lemon acidity.”

Muscadet is a surprisingly vibrant white wine, made with the little-known Melon de Bourgogne grape in a select part of the Loire Valley in France. Its best expressions typically come from the region’s oldest vines, and the Granger family has some of the oldest in the area. The wine is fresh, zesty, and perfect for all sorts of summer cuisines.

Why wait for the next 92 point score to come in? As far back as 2008, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate wrote this about the Moutons: “Seldom will you experience a wine that combines palpable density with levity, invigoration and refreshment in the manner of this particular tonic.”
