Château de Pellehaut is located in the small village Montréal-du-Gers, and represents one the great values in Armagnac, if not all of brandy. Purchased by Gaston Béraut shortly after the Second World War, he has slowly developed one of the largest single properties in the region. Béraut's sons Mathieu and Martin take care of the winemaking and the maturation of the brandies in barrel. As part of the Tenereze region of Armagnac, the soil around Pellehaut contains more chalk and limestone than in the Bas-Armagnac, and the spirits generally take longer to develop, beginning to really show complexity after 15+ years in wood. The 2001 is made from 100% Folle Blanche and was bottled in 2020 at 49.3% ABV with a 19 year old age statement. Pellehaut's younger brandies (a la the 2001) have less of that raisined fruit note, showcasing more of the bold spice from the oak; the Folle Blanche distillates in particular. The 2001 is a Bourbon lover's dream, brimming with vanilla and baking spices, before diving deeper into dark chocolate notes and an herbaceous finish.
