Château de Pellehaut is located in the small village Montréal-du-Gers, and represents one the great values in Armagnac, if not all of brandy. Purchased by Gaston Béraut shortly after the Second World War, he has slowly developed one of the largest single properties in the region. Béraut's sons Mathieu and Martin take care of the winemaking and the maturation of the brandies in barrel. As part of the Tenereze region of Armagnac, the soil around Pellehaut contains more chalk and limestone than in the Bas-Armagnac, and the spirits generally take longer to develop, beginning to really show complexity after 15+ years in wood. The 1986 is made from 100% Ugni Blanc and was bottled in 2020 at 45% ABV with a 34 year old age statement. Like the 1987, the older Ugni Blanc distillates share a similarity to Cognac, but when the fruit is still present they blur the lines between brandy and Bourbon. The 86 still has plenty of ample fruit and the gentler proof makes just a bit more supple, with the lower ABV allowing the viscosity of the fruit and the oak to take center stage.
