I've purchased more bottles of Compass Box's Flaming Heart than any other whiskey, Scotch or Bourbon. I've also drained more bottles of Flaming Heart than any other whiskey, and I've never tired of it. For my palate, the Flaming Heart is utter perfection, the combination of sweet and peat that my mouth craves, balanced by two of the best Scottish single malts in existence: Clynelish and Caol Ila.
With the 750ml American release long sold out, and the recent change in U.S. law allowing the import of 700ml bottles, the first call I made was to Compass Box in Scotland to inquire about additional inventory of Flaming Heart. Lucky for us, they had it available and we purchased every bottle they would sell us.
Now the whisky has arrived and I couldn't be more excited. The 2018 6th edition is bottled at 48.9% ABV and consists of:
- 39.5% Caol Ila - Refill Barrel
- 10.9% Clynelish - Recharred Hogshead
- 5.7% Clynelish - Refill Hogshead
- 28.7% Deanston - Refill Hogshead
- 7.7% Highland Malt - Heavily Toasted French Oak Barrel
- 7.5% Compass Box Spice Tree Extravaganza
Everything about this whisky pops in all the right places.
It starts off sweet and malty on the palate, before slowly morphing into campfire smoke and phenolic notes, finishing with big oak flavors, creme brulée, and vanilla. For me personally, it's everything I want on any night of the week, no matter the weather, no matter what I'm eating, no matter my mood.
I'd recommend buying as many as your can afford. Johnnie Blue ain't got nothin' on the Flaming Heart.
